With Never Mind the Weather, Schönfeld Gallery brings together three artists who each create a distinctive world of their own. Takeshi Matsugami has been an established presence in the gallery’s programme for several years. In this group exhibition, his work enters into dialogue with that of Tamara Van San and Samuel Lemba, both exhibiting with Schönfeld for the first time.

Working across different backgrounds, materials and visual languages, the three artists share an intuitive and deeply personal approach. Each allows room for what emerges in the making: an unexpected form, a gesture, a fleeting observation. The exhibition brings exuberant sculpture into conversation with layered paintings and the quiet poetry of everyday life.

Tamara Van San

Tamara Van San explores the possibilities of volume, form and colour. After studying sculpture at Sint-Lucas in Antwerp, she soon moved away from working from a model to experiment with unconventional materials and vivid colours. In recent years, clay and colourful glazes have become central to her practice, which encompasses both spatial installations and smaller sculptures.

Her works seem to grow through an energy of their own. Forms expand, accumulate and seek a balance. Within this exhibition, they give a tangible, spatial expression to the pleasure of experimentation.

Samuel Lemba

Born in Kinshasa in 1999, Samuel Lemba grew up in Liège and now lives and works in Brussels. He graduated from La Cambre, where he received the Fondation CAB Prize. Combining spray paint, pigment and oil, he develops paintings in which figuration and abstraction continually give way to one another.

His practice explores the relationship between material and spiritual experience, informed by his connection to different cultural worlds. Painting engages the body, gesture and a relationship with the sacred. The image remains open: what appears may dissolve again, making room for another kind of presence.

Takeshi Matsugami

Takeshi Matsugami finds his subjects in his immediate surroundings. Objects, trees, birds and landscapes catch his attention in daily life and on walks with his family. Photographs often become the starting point for paintings that distil what he observes into a few essential forms.

His background in graphic design and affinity with illustration and manga inform his clear contours and simple compositions. Visible brushstrokes and uneven layers of paint preserve the spontaneity of the painting process. Familiar things acquire an unexpected intensity, inviting us to pause and look again.

In Never Mind the Weather, these three practices meet through their openness to the unforeseen. Van San’s freedom with form, Lemba’s searching images and Matsugami’s attention to small observations each offer a different way of experiencing the world. The title can be read as an invitation to remain curious as circumstances change: to look closely, welcome surprise and discover where the work might take us.
